Day Zero

Day Zero – 101 in 1001

I first stumbled across “101 in 1001” a couple of months ago, while perusing the blogosphere. Basically, you sit down and make a list of 101 things that you want to accomplish in 1001 days – about 2.75 years. They can be little tasks that you keep saying you want to do, but never seem to get around to, or major goals that involve significant effort and the expense of time or money. They should be measurable and clear, so that there isn’t any confusion about whether or not you can consider them accomplished.

The idea immediately spoke to me. I am one of those people who is always coming up with things that I want to do, but never seem to actually get around to making them happen. I have tendencies to daydream, and feel that I may often overlook the little pleasures that pop up when you are paying attention and living in the moment.

It took me a long while to make my list – 101 things is a lot of things!! The first twenty or thirty came pretty easily, but after that they trickled out like a leaky faucet. I would just keep a notebook with me all the time, and as I thought of something else that I wanted to add, I would write it down. The whole process took me about two months.

But, finally I’m done! My list is fairly eclectic. There are a lot of items that focus on things that I want to learn, or at least try out – surfing, scuba diving, learning how to knit. There are the major things that I really want to do, like write a novel, and visit New York City. And many other items are what I think of as rolling stone items – like practice yoga every day for a month, or give up television for a week. These are things that I want to incorporate in to my life on a more regular basis, so I hope that by trying them on for a while, momentum will gather and they’ll stick.

You’ll notice that there are dollar amounts behind each one in brackets. I’ve decided that to make things a little more interesting, I am going to put aside a bit of money for each task accomplished — sort of like paying myself for getting things done! Then, hopefully by the end of the 1001 days, I’ll have a nice little nest egg for something fun! (Plus, a couple of my goals are pretty big ticket items, so those savings could come in handy!)

So, without further ado… my 101 in 1001. Read more about the Day Zero movement (yes, it’s actually a movement!) here. What are you waiting for?
